Academy for Global Exploration's strong college-preparatory curriculum provides a liberal arts education, preparing students to continue their studies at leading colleges and universities. AGE is fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools and operates in compliance with the Oregon Department of Education.
Whether domestic or abroad, students maintain a full academic course load. Academic lessons are intimately connected to the natural environment in which students find themselves. In a typical school day, students might demonstrate a physics lesson through rock climbing, speak Spanish with native villagers, learn about marine biology with Greek fishermen, or study earth science on the glaciers of the Andes. At AGE, cultural immersion is integral, with language study, home-stays, and cross-cultural exchange all part of the educational experience.
AGE's balanced curriculum offers each student a firm grounding in the fundamentals of clear thinking and expression with an emphasis on individual development. While fostering broad exposure in all disciplines, AGE also gives students opportunities to pursue special areas of interest. Individual attention is possible because of small class sizes and dedicated faculty. AGE maintains a student-to-teacher ratio of 3 to 1, providing each student the attention he or she deserves. This creates an intimate, yet lively, atmosphere where ideas, thoughts, and feelings can flourish without bounds.
A typical school day for AGE students begins with breakfast from 7:15 to 8:00 a.m. After breakfast, students start the academic school day with two academic periods; each period is 55 minutes in duration. There is a 20 minute morning break followed by two more academic periods. Lunch begins at 12:10 and the final two (55 min) academic periods of the day follow lunch. At 2:55 p.m., the conclusion of the structured school day, students participate in two to three additional hours of learning opportunities such as outdoor adventure/physical education activities, cultural opportunities in the form of field trips, or cultural exchanges such as community service projects. Dinner is at approximately 6:30, leaving time in the evening to fit in an hour-long structured study hall. From 10:00 to 11:00 p.m. all students are required to be in their own rooms and at 11:00 students are to be in bed with their lights out for the night. Students' lives at AGE are highly structured and filled from morning to night with meaningful and exciting learning experiences. It is important to understand that because of AGE's emphasis on cultural studies and outdoor pursuits in addition to the rigorous academic curriculum, each student's personal time is limited.
Students must enroll in a minimum of five academic classes per semester. AGE courses meet 124 hours per year (62 hours per semester) and are awarded one (1) Carnegie Unit of credit upon successful completion of course requirements (semester courses earn 0.5 units of credit). By assigning credits in this way, AGE aligns with the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools, the Oregon Department of Education as well as most US school systems. AGE requires a minimum of 25 credits for a standard diploma. As a college preparatory program, AGE models its department and graduation requirements around the general expectations of colleges and universities.
